The Research Center of Special Glass & Fiber, Shanghai Institute of Optics and Fine Mechanics (SIOM, CAS) (former Laboratory of High Power Laser Components) was founded in 1964, nearly the same year when laser was discovered. Since its establishment, the center has been focusing on R&D of new laser materials and core laser devices. Currently, its main research areas are laser glass and special glass, laser fiber and special fiber, supercontinuum laser, and structure-activity relationship between laser glass and optical fiber. The center can provide an outstanding infrastructure, state-of-the-art scientific equipments, precise mechanical workshops and large-room laboratory space for synthesis of glasses, fabrication of specialty optical fiber, chemical and physical characterization of glass material, and spectroscopy measurement.
